Practical answers
Medicare questions, explained
Where do I start if Medicare is new to me?
Begin with the enrollment steps for Part A and Part B, then explore how you want to receive benefits and handle remaining costs. Keep enrollment timing and coverage comparison as separate tasks so one does not distract from a deadline.

Is Medicare Advantage the same as a Supplement?
No. Medicare Advantage is a private-plan way to receive Medicare benefits. Medigap works alongside Original Medicare to help with certain out-of-pocket costs. Compare these as different coverage paths, including how prescriptions fit into each.

What is the annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period?
From October 15 through December 7, eligible people can make specified changes to Medicare Advantage and drug coverage for January 1. This is not the same as first signing up for Part A or Part B, or the six-month Medigap window.

Who can use the January–March Medicare Advantage window?
The January 1–March 31 Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is for people already in Medicare Advantage. It allows one switch to another Advantage plan or a return to Original Medicare, with an opportunity to join a drug plan. It does not let someone in Original Medicare newly join Advantage during that window.
Can moving or losing coverage create another enrollment opportunity?
Certain events can qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. The permitted change and deadline depend on the event. Keep notices showing when the change happened and check the specific rule before assuming you can enroll at any time.
