Medicare Advantage or a Supplement?

These are different coverage paths. Understanding their roles helps you ask better questions before making a choice.

Compare the structure first

Neither path should be selected solely on a single benefit or monthly price. Begin with how coverage works, then compare the details against your priorities.

Bring the comparison back to you

Choose three priorities and use them to evaluate both paths: for example, keeping a particular doctor, planning for travel, or balancing predictable monthly expenses with costs when you need care. Ask an advisor to explain tradeoffs using those same priorities.

Before making changes, review enrollment considerations and prescription coverage.

Practical answers

Questions to resolve before switching paths

Does the fall enrollment period guarantee I can get Medigap?

No. An opportunity to leave Medicare Advantage and a right to buy Medigap are separate questions. Before changing coverage, confirm the Medicare election period, your proposed effective dates and your Medigap rights. Avoid dropping a plan while a needed replacement policy is still uncertain.

What should I compare on one worksheet?

Give each option a column for monthly premiums, costs when you receive care, provider access, prescription coverage and enrollment conditions. Leave unanswered items blank and bring them to a conversation. A benefit that looks attractive in isolation may not answer the question that matters most to you.

Choose using care access, total costs and enrollment rights

Medicare Advantage provides Part A and Part B benefits through a private plan and usually includes drug coverage. Original Medicare can be paired with a separate Part D plan and, if available to you, a Medigap policy for certain remaining costs.

Compare the same care needs

  • Providers: Original Medicare lets you use providers accepting Medicare nationwide. Advantage access and out-of-network costs depend on the plan; check your exact doctors and hospitals.
  • Budget: Add premiums to expected service and prescription costs. Advantage has a yearly limit on covered Part A and Part B out-of-pocket costs; Original Medicare alone has no yearly limit. Medigap benefits vary by policy.
  • Care rules: Ask about referrals and prior authorization for the services you use.
  • Prescriptions: Verify each medication, pharmacy and restriction under the proposed drug coverage.

Check your ability to buy Medigap before switching

The federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months beginning when you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. Outside that window, medical underwriting may affect your options unless a guaranteed-issue or other protection applies. State protections vary. An opportunity to leave Advantage does not by itself guarantee access to Medigap.
