Understanding Medicare Supplements

Medigap helps with certain costs left to you by Original Medicare. Start by understanding what it does—and where other coverage fits.

A companion to Original Medicare

Medicare Supplement Insurance, also called Medigap, is sold by private insurers to help pay certain out-of-pocket costs under Original Medicare. You generally need both Part A and Part B to buy a policy.

Make the comparison practical

Ask for a written explanation of what each policy pays, what you would still pay, and how premiums may change over time. Keep the same assumptions across quotes so the comparison stays useful.

  • Identify the policy type you are comparing.
  • Review the premium and any costs that remain your responsibility.
  • Ask which enrollment protections apply to your circumstances.
  • Discuss prescription coverage as a separate decision.

Review timing before making a change

Do not assume switching policies later will always work the same way as buying your first policy. Ask about your enrollment rights and state-specific rules before ending coverage you already have.

Practical answers

Medicare Supplement questions, answered

When is my Medigap Open Enrollment Period?

The federal six-month period begins in the first month you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During that window, insurers cannot use medical underwriting to deny you a Medigap policy they sell because of your health. This window is different from Medicare’s annual fall enrollment period.

Can I buy a Supplement later if I change my mind?

You may have options, but buying later is not always guaranteed under federal rules. Outside open enrollment, your health can affect availability or price unless a protection applies. State rules can provide additional rights. Confirm your specific rights before cancelling existing coverage.

Can I keep Medigap with Medicare Advantage?

Medigap is designed to supplement Original Medicare. It cannot pay Medicare Advantage deductibles, copayments or premiums. If you are moving between coverage paths, first confirm the enrollment timing and whether you have a right to buy or return to a Medigap policy.
